IN.TUNE unites eight European universities in music and arts in an alliance to forge a joint, long-term strategy for excellence in education, research, innovation, and societal service. The aim is to learn from each other and to foster future collaboration in research, with a particular focus on linking research to education.
In the run-up to the event, participants will take part in a dedicated online Knowledge Hub which will serve as an incubator for the content of the AIRE. Engagement in the Knowledge Hub is a key part of the process, shapes contributions at the event and is expected to continue beyond the event itself.
A) Towards a new perspective on research culture in higher arts education: How is research performed and what are its implications for (research) education?
Which forms of research are understood within our institutions, in relation to questions about methods, results, interdisciplinarity, and integration in education? How can we develop a future understanding of varieties of methods in research in the arts to promote research-led teaching? Is a distinction between artistic and scientific research a question of methods more than a question of research areas? What might be relevant future research actions, activities, and contexts (e.g. music and cultural diversity, sound materialism, music and the environmental crisis, music and AI), and how can this inform the curriculum?
B) Researcher identities/positions in higher arts education: Who does the research? What role does it play in our educational institutions?
In teaching intensive environments, how can more teachers and students be involved in research activities, to support research-led teaching? To what extent is research recognised and accepted as a strategic choice – or as an investment? How does research inform educational practices and to what extent is research motivated by educational needs? What are the experiences with leadership on research within the alliance institutions?
C) Resources/infrastructures for research in higher arts education: How is it organised institutionally?
How can we
develop the position of our research in a situation where research may
internally compete with other missions of the institutions and, for external
funding, compete with other, perhaps more research-oriented institutions? How
can the alliance institutions best support collaboration in research projects
and research education, for example, by connecting it to the curriculum?
Over 1,5 days, we will discuss the above-mentioned themes. The preparation of the event will inform the first stages of Knowledge Hub1, which will also incorporate its outcomes and conclusions. The presenters will be selected by each institution.
1st day 3.11.2025: Focus on theme A
2nd day 4.11.2025: Focus on themes B & C / conclusions and final reflections
Please note that the programme is subject to change.
The event is open to teachers, researchers, students, and leaders of organisational units from all alliance members. Due to room capacity constraints, participation in the event, including members of the wider audience, is limited to 100 attendees. Online participation will be possible. There will be no conference fee, and meals will be provided to participants. Limited financial support is available to the presenters of the institutional presentations.
