Register now: AIRE 2026 – Research Education and Supervision in Focus

Registration is now open for the second AIRE – Annual IN.TUNE Research in Education Event, focusing on research education and supervision in master’s and PhD programmes across the alliance. Join us at the Norwegian Academy of Music, Oslo, 8–9 April 2026. Register by 20 March 2026 (or 25 February 2026 for invited presenters and IN.TUNE personnel).
AIRE is organised in connection with EPARM 2026, hosted by AEC, which starts directly after the event.

The Annual IN.TUNE Research in Education Event (AIRE) is one of IN.TUNE’s key meeting points for strengthening the links between research and (higher) music and arts education across the alliance. Now in its second edition, AIRE 2026 brings staff and students together to share experience, compare approaches, and build new collaborations that connect research education, supervision, and teaching practice.

What is AIRE 2026 about?

AIRE 2026 places the spotlight on research education and supervision. The programme will explore how supervision and research training are organised, experienced, and developed in master’s and PhD programmes across IN.TUNE institutions.

Across the two days, the event will create space to:

  • Share concrete practices of supervision and research training in music and the arts
  • Reflect on challenges and differing institutional frameworks
  • Discuss how responsibilities and roles are shaped and shared
  • Explore approaches that connect artistic and academic research with teaching and learning
  • Learn from the perspectives of both staff and students, across diverse traditions and contexts

Whether you supervise, teach, design research-rich curricula, or are currently studying in a research programme, AIRE 2026 is designed to support open exchange and practical learning.

Keynote speaker

We are pleased to welcome Kristina Mariager-Anderson (Danish School of Education, Aarhus University) as keynote speaker for AIRE 2026.

Dates, times and location

Where: Norwegian Academy of Music (Norges musikkhøgskole), Oslo
When: Wednesday 8 April 2026 (12:00 noon) to Thursday 9 April 2026 (12:00 noon)

The programme begins at midday on Wednesday and concludes at midday on Thursday, making it possible to travel in and out efficiently and, for many participants, to continue their week in Oslo attending EPARM event.

Programme focus and structure

AIRE 2026 is centred on dialogue and shared learning between participants who teach, supervise, and study within research-rich programmes in music and the arts. The programme is being designed to support both big-picture discussion and hands-on exchange of practice, including:

- How supervision is structured within institutions and programmes

- How institutional frameworks enable or constrain research education
- What “good supervision” looks like from student and staff perspectives
- Ways of connecting supervision practice with learning outcomes, research training, and broader educational development
- How artistic and academic research approaches intersect in supervision and research education

A detailed programme will be published closer to the event.

Who should attend?

AIRE 2026 welcomes participants from across the IN.TUNE alliance and is particularly relevant for:

  • Supervisors and teachers working in master’s and doctoral programmes
  • Programme leaders and staff involved in research education and curriculum development
  • Students in research-rich programmes who want to reflect on and strengthen supervision cultures
  • Colleagues working with artistic research, research training, and professional development in higher music and arts education

By bringing multiple roles and experiences into the same room, AIRE aims to strengthen shared understanding and inspire improvements that benefit students, supervisors, and institutions alike.
